Building code to tackle climate change
8 May 2009
New building regulations have been issued in Wales in an attempt to combat climate change.
According to the Assembly Government, the environmental standards for new buildings will lead to a 31% reduction in carbon emissions from new homes.
It says this will be done by making properties more energy-efficient and as a result more eco-friendly.
Under the new regulations from September this year buildings will be scored using the Code for Sustainable Homes. All new homes must score at least three stars out of six. All other buildings will be rated using a separate code.
Environment minister Jane Davidson said: "This is another demonstration of the Welsh Assembly Government's commitment to protecting our environment for future generations.
"I am determined to use the planning system to move towards zero carbon buildings."
Wales is now the first UK nation to set minimum standards for sustainable buildings through the planning system.
